AI is part of the future whether we want it to be or not, and in that sense, artists don’t exactly have the option of pretending it isn’t reshaping the landscape. So maybe we are forced to use it to some extent, as it increasingly become apart of daily life. But we can work responsibly and ethically (acceptance doesn’t mean surrender!) AI can be used to support human creation and generate ideas–but it’s important to be aware of its dangers. Questions of authorship, the use of human labor, algorithmic bias, etc.
Many artists still choose to disengage with AI. The presence of AI doesn’t automatically mean we need to embrace it and use it.
The question we should ask is: how do we position ourselves ethically and creatively in relation to it? This marks a shift; the move from the idea of the artist as a singular, autonomous creator to the artist as collaborator. Whether artists work with AI, against it, or alongside it, we all need to maintain critical awareness in an era where the boundaries of art are being questioned and redefined.
What does it mean to be/think as an artist in the age of AI?
